Scenario
Smart waste classification and recycling system in residential communities.
System Configuration
X-DI input board (monitors bin door status and overflow sensors)
X-RS485 board (connects to weighing instruments)
Implementation
The smart recycling station uses the ARMxy industrial controller running OpenPLC to manage the logic of the waste classification system. Each recyclable category bin is equipped with a magnetic door switch (dry contact) and an overflow sensor (PNP photoelectric type), all monitored through the X-DI board. The X-RS485 board communicates with weighing instruments via Modbus RTU to acquire the current load status in each bin.
OpenPLC processes this data in real-time, enabling automated control of the bin access, weighing, and overflow detection logic. All data — including bin usage, weight metrics, and status — is transmitted to the municipal management platform via a 4G communication module.
Key Features & Advantages
Real-time monitoring of each recyclable bin (door status, fill level, weight)
Flexible remote updates to classification rules — for example, adding a new plastic subtype category
Compatibility with both magnetic and photoelectric sensors, supported by the X and Y series DI boards
Open architecture for easy customization and integration with city-level smart sanitation systems
Conclusion
By using OpenPLC and ARMxy industrial hardware, the smart recycling station achieves reliable automated control, data reporting, and remote management. This solution empowers city sanitation departments with actionable insights and flexible upgrades, supporting smarter and greener urban waste handling.
